Lonzo Ball has made headlines for the Los Angeles Lakers not just with his play on the court, but with the shoes that he is doing it with.

With all the buzz and hype around basketball shoes, you would think something unprecedented happened – like Michael Jordan wearing Adidas. What is really transpiring, however, is a simple game of shoe roulette by Los Angeles Lakers point guard Lonzo Ball. Never has shoe choices in the Summer League been this documented, and of course it takes Ball to cause all this talk.

Ball is already a polarizing figure in his own right. The high school phenom turned college stud turned Los Angeles Laker is already one of the most well-known guys in the league. Mostly due to his father, LaVar, Lonzo already has a target on his back by some NBA players. Yet still, people can’t help but watch this kid do work.

At least thus far the 19-year-old point guard has backed up this hype around him with solid play. After a disappointing first game, Ball has bounced back. Ball has flirted with a triple double in nearly every game he’s played, even recording two of them. Overall, Ball has averaged 16.3 points, 9.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds per game.

Granted, it is just Summer League and the level of competition is not the same as it will be in the regular season. However, this play alone is enough to create a buzz. The buzz does not stop there though, as Ball is making headlines with something as little as his choice of sneaker.

More from Los Angeles Lakers

As you may or may not know, LaVar is adamant about creating a shoe empire for his three sons. Lonzo, being the eldest, was the first to represent this shoe brand, Big Baller Brand. BBB has a selection of fairly expensive sneakers, with Lonzo rocking them the first two games of the Summer League.

Since then Ball has worn Nike, Under Armour, Jordan and Adidas. His play in each shoe has varied, with many speculating that a shoe deal may be in place.

The entire narrative painted by Lonzo and LaVar is that with Big Baller Brand you can wear whatever shoe you want. Whether it be a move to get Lonzo a deal with a big company or recruit other athletes, it seems to be calculated.

Heck, knowing LaVar the plan could be to set up a partnership like Jordan with Nike. Lonzo could still be rocking Big Baller Brand, under Nike. I highly doubt that, but that could be a possibility.

Being realistic though, I do not think it is much of anything. As we continue to speculate this storyline begins to grow legs. Personally, I do not think that Lonzo or LaVar had some master plan with this shoe switch. They likely are just trying to find a shape and design that Lonzo likes and copy that into their signature BBB shoe.

I could be wrong, however. With LaVar and his marketing prowess, this very well could be a calculated move. All I know for certain is that I don’t care what shoe Lonzo Ball is wearing as long as he performs for the Los Angeles Lakers.
