Lakers Rumors: Team might regret cutting David Nwaba
By Keith Rivas
The latest Lakers rumors are about the decision to cut David Nwaba this summer.
For the Los Angeles Lakers, change seems to be at the forefront of the new vision in mind of the new front office. Magic Johnson had no issue parting ways with D’Angelo Russell, a second overall pick from 2015. The team also chose to waive David Nwaba, who was a promising young star, during Summer League.
As cold as it might’ve been, they had to make a business decision at that point. Nwaba wasn’t in their future plans for one reason or another, and now the team is moving forward.
Seeing how Nwaba would’ve fit in with Lonzo Ball running the offense was something fans were hoping to see in part. Ball is obviously one of the centerpieces this season, alongside Brandon Ingram, but Ball can make everyone better.

After Nwaba was cut, rumor had it that the Lakers could try and re-sign him after clearing waivers. It was done in order to make room for the money offered to Kentavious Caldwell-Pope on a one-year deal.
Instead of bringing him back, the Lakers lost Nwaba to Chicago. The Bulls decided that Nwaba was a worthwhile investment, and made sure to not waste any time claiming him off waivers.
The reason the Lakers may regret the decision to let Nwaba walk is simple — the more young options for Lonzo Ball to facilitate to, the better.
D’Angelo Russell didn’t have passing as one of his strengths, but he knew how to get a shot to go down. For all of the hate that the kid received while in Los Angeles, he could play — he just wasn’t the right fit for the Lakers either.
Nwaba enters a Chicago team with much more dysfunction than any player in the NBA would ever really want to deal with. Problems persisted with Jimmy Butler and Rajon Rondo last season, and now they’ll have new faces to deal with.
Overall, the major loss here is that the Lakers threw away young talent. It was the type of talent that could’ve thrived in their system, and they can’t get him back now.

They will regret the decision ten fold if the experiment with KCP ends up backfiring. That means all of the money they put into his deal could’ve gone to better use. For now, though, we’ll just have to see what Nwaba does as part of the Bulls and reevaluate the decision down the road.
