Dodgers Rumors: Does a trade for Giancarlo Stanton make sense for LA?
Regardless of the Dodgers’ financial flexibility, the contract is going to raise concern
If any team can afford to take on a majority of Stanton’s contract, it’s the Dodgers, but does that mean they should? Though the free agency of Clayton Kershaw is a long ways off, it is still something to think about. The Dodgers will most likely look to offer Kershaw a massive contract in 2021, and so taking one on now could be risky. The Marlins could offer to pay a good portion what remains of the $325 million, but there is no guarantee.
The Marlins did not pick up the option of Ichiro Suzuki for 2018, making him a free agent, and lowering the amount long-term contracts that they currently have. There have already been rumors about Christian Yelich, Marcell Ozuna and Dee Gordon being traded as well. All signs point to the Marlins wanting to begin a full rebuild, and if Stanton is traded, a rebuild will be inevitable.
Should the Dodgers cement themselves as 2018 World Series favorites and trade for Stanton?
Yes.
The Dodgers should trade for Giancarlo Stanton.
Justin Verlander will always be one of the best trades in history. The Astros wanted to put themselves in the best position possible to win in October, so they went out and traded for Verlander, and now they are the 2017 World Series Champions. Trades don’t always work out, but when they do, they can change franchises. The Dodgers have an opportunity to acquire one of the best sluggers baseball has ever seen, and opportunities like this are extremely rare.
We have no way of knowing what will happen this offseason, but if this is the offseason in which Stanton becomes a Dodger, then they will be headed into 2018 stronger than ever.
