Los Angeles Lakers are flirting with mutiny right now
By Keith Rivas
If they’re not careful, the Los Angeles Lakers could find themselves in dangerous territory.
It’s one thing to start thinking of reasons as to why a head coach might not be a good fit with a particular team. In the case of Luke Walton, that argument tends to come from frustration stemming from the young core still not quite where we all want them to be.
Lonzo Ball has stepped up his game since returning with a shoulder issue, but that might not be enough for the team to look past comments from his father that continually find their way into headlines everywhere.
First, LaVar Ball critiqued the fact that he felt Walton wasn’t the right coach for his son, and then later went on to talk in a separate interview about his perception of things being that the Lakers don’t want to play for Walton at all.
And if he says he can see it, trust him when he says that he believes it.

Then we had a chance for Lonzo to really put this to a rest and stand behind his coach or at least let us know how he felt about the matter and what his father had stated. Instead, the younger Ball insisted that he’ll “play for anybody” while Kyle Kuzma didn’t mince words in his backing of Walton.
Rumor even has it that David Fizdale, fired from Memphis earlier this season, is someone that the organization is considering should Walton get the boot. Fizdale’s benching of Marc Gasol in the fourth quarter of a game didn’t sit well with the veteran, and shortly after that decision was made the team moved on from Fizdale as their head coach.
Walton has done what he can to avoid the comments from the elder Ball to turn into anything more than comments from an unhappy parent who has a strong opinion. However, Ball seems to have succeeded in calling the Lakers in a bluff, as they too have been silent to respond like we thought they would.
So what’s next?
Well, if the Lakers fire Walton, they’ll only do it once they’ve secured another guy for the job. You would hope that they’re not that arrogant as to just fire Walton without a new hire ready to start immediately when you have LaVar’s hand on or near a red button at all times.

Perhaps Fizdale would be a good hire to help corral LaVar in a little more with what he says publicly about the team and how they go about their business. But until a move comes from the top, Los Angeles will be stuck in an awkward limbo that it only can blame on itself.
