This would be a move to the future for the Miami Marlins. Practically speaking, the last move the Dodgers are likely to make is a Grandal for another catcher swap. However, while the Marlins are practically giving away their best pieces the Dodgers may look to swoop in and take an upgrade at catcher.

More from LA Sports Hub

Realmuto posted a better WAR last season than Grandal with a more consistent bat and just as solid fielding. Realmuto still has power, evident from his 17 home runs last season, however, he has shown the ability to be a .300 hitter. He hit that mark in 2106; surrounded by bats on the Dodgers, the batting average can return to that form.

Plus, Realmuto is locked down for four more seasons. That is why Los Angeles would be so willing to give up two young catchers in the deal alongside Grandal.

Farmer is a capable backup that may take over the role if Grandal walks after 2018. Smith is a farm system catcher that is big league capable in two or so seasons.

The two sides swapping relievers is strange, both are around the same production so their inclusion is questionable. However, if the Marlins are trying to strip the team down, this is the best utilization of Realmuto. Miami would be getting a lot of catching depth without having to buy-in on Grandal past 2018.

Overall, I personally do not think that the Los Angeles Dodgers are going to deal Yasmani Grandal this offseason. However, the Dodgers trade rumors around the slugging catcher certainly are interesting.
