Lakers trade: Three Reasons why the Isaiah Thomas trade is perfect
By Jason Reed
3. That draft pick is huge
The Cleveland Cavaliers draft pick may not seem like a big deal on the surface. As it stands, the Cavaliers would have the 23rd overall selection in the NBA Draft. It is hard to get excited for that, especially considering the last three 23rd overall picks have been OG Anunoby, Ante Zizic and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson.

However, that does not render the pick completely useless.
The Los Angeles Lakers made it apparent in the 2017 NBA Draft that scouting may be their strongest suit. Kyle Kumza was selected at 27th overall and will likely be the runner-up for Ben Simmons’ Rookie of the Year award. Josh Hart was the 30th overall selection and has made a huge impact recently.
If any team is going to make the most out of a 23rd overall pick, it is going to be the Los Angeles Lakers.
This is especially important considering that the Lakers do not have a first round pick heading into the draft. Either the Boston Celtics or Philadelphia 76ers will take the Lakers’ pick, depending where they fall in the order.
The Lakers will not find another Kyle Kumza. However, they need this pick to add roster depth next season. Both Brook Lopez and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope are out the door, opening up space at center and shooting guard.
