Discussing Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold with Factory of Sadness
By Jason Reed
Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold are two of the few elite quarterbacks available in the 2018 NFL Draft. To understand what the Browns may do, we reached out to FanSided’s Cleveland site, Factory of Sadness.
The 2018 NFL Draft is loaded with quarterback talent. From the likes of Heisman winners Baker Mayfield and Lamar Jackson to the gunslingers like Josh Allen and Mason Rudolph to the Southern California boys of Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold; there are some very promising quarterbacks to look for in this draft.
The Cleveland Browns own both the first overall and fourth overall selections in the draft. Of course, the team does need a quarterback, as DeShone Kizer is not turning out to be the guy.
For some, this quarterback should be Baker Mayfield, for others (including Mel Kiper) it should be Josh Allen. For us here at LA Sports Hub, we want to see either of the LA college quarterbacks go first overall.
Of course, we do have a little bit of bias towards our hometown quarterbacks when it comes to the Browns. So, to get the opinion of a Browns’ fan, we reached out to our sister site, Factory of Sadness.
Ryan Rosko answered five questions we sent his way around Darnold, Rosen and the Browns. This is not the first time we collaborated, as we also discussed the blockbuster Isaiah Thomas trade.
So, what does Ryan think?
1. First and foremost, if you had to choose between Josh Rosen and Sam Darnold to be the quarterback of the Cleveland Browns, who would it be?
Choosing between the two, I’m selecting Darnold and I don’t see it being that close too.
2. Since you picked Sam Darnold, where do you see Josh Rosen ending up?
With Darnold in Cleveland, Rosen should become a Giant. If somehow he were to slide past them I’d be surprised as of now to see the Colts not trade out to a team to select the former UCLA product.
3. Would you prefer to use the first or fourth overall pick on the quarterback, does Saquon Barkley influence that opinion? If not, who are you eyeballing with the fourth overall pick?

In an ideal world, neither pick would be used on a quarterback. DeShone Kizer didn’t have much to work with but with how the NFL is now (and especially in Cleveland), he’s not going to get the luxury to show he can be the answer.
There is not a QB that is clear and away the QB1 this year and because of that I’d prefer to wait till four but I don’t see John Dorsey doing that. Yes, Saquon Barkley is in the discussion but more so with the fourth pick. I’d like to see both Barkley and Minkah Fitzpatrick in Cleveland but since only one is likely to become a Brown, I’d actually prefer Fitzpatrick.
4. How much improvement can we see out of the Browns next year with these two high picks?
Progress will be seen but in terms of a win-loss record, nothing impactful will be obvious until Hue Jackson is replaced. In terms of next year, winning three games would be a good year right now.
5. With all of this being said, is there a different QB other than Rosen/Darnold that intrigues you?
Not many Cleveland fans will agree but Wyoming’s Josh Allen is that guy. Any team other than Cleveland should be interested in him. Allen is going to be drafted earlier than some may think. With that in mind, if the Browns somehow bypassed QB with their first pick and if Allen rises more or ends up being viewed as a mid-first, I’d say trade up and take him.

Well, it seems as if Ryan is not too keen on neither Josh Rosen or Sam Darnold. As talented as they are, he may have a point that the Cleveland Browns are better suited to pursue other areas of need. With Kirk Cousins and Nick Foles also on the market, chances are we may not see either Southern California quarterback taken by the Cleveland Browns.
