Baltimore Ravens

Brandon Deffet of Ebony Bird did an excellent pros/cons piece of Tavon Austin coming to the Baltimore Ravens. Deffet made some good points, solidifying the idea that Austin could find himself on the Baltimore Ravens next season.

On the surface, Austin seems to be just a punt and kick returner for the Baltimore Ravens. Austin has not shown a consistency to be an every-down receiver but can still use his blistering speed to make special things happen in special teams. For that reason alone Austin becomes an intriguing option for any team, let alone the Ravens.

However, I would also argue that there is a spot for Austin in the Ravens’ receiving core even if he only slightly exceeds expectations. The receiving core in Baltimore is weak as it is and adding a blistering receiver like Austin to play the slot would only benefit the entire team. We all know how much Joe Flacco loves to sling it, after all.

Not only is there an avenue for Austin to explore in the passing game, there is also an avenue to explore in the running game. Austin could serve as an option in the running game to complete jet sweeps, draws and check-down screens. Baltimore could line him up at traditional wideout as well as behind Flacco or beside him in a shotgun set.
