1. Ben Simmons

  • 16.4 points, 7.7 rebounds, 7.6 assists, 0.9 blocks, 1.8 steals

I still have to give the edge to Ben Simmons, who was running away with the Rookie of the Year award earlier in the year. While Mitchell has opened up the discussion, Simmons has still been the best all-around rookie this NBA season.

More from Los Angeles Lakers

Simmons does not have the same scoring ability as Mitchell. His mid-range shot arguably average at best and his lack of a three-point shot would seemingly render him useless as a point guard in today’s NBA. The three-pointer has become so crucial to success in the NBA, Simmons (alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo) are rewriting that script. Simmons has attempted just 10 three-pointers this season.

However, where Simmons is lacking on three-point scoring, he is making up everywhere else. His lengthy and ability to finish at the basket makes him a threat down low. His post moves are great, his passing is phenomenal, he is an elite rebounder as a guard.

Simply put, Simmons is a Lonzo Ball that is better at scoring. The six-foot-ten point guard is the closest thing the NBA has gotten to LeBron James. Simmons shares that same player mold as James. James is more explosive and has a better shot, Simmons, however, can contribute in any aspect of the game and really could play all five positions.

Ben Simmons is very, very special. I think Simmons will win an MVP award in the next five seasons. Missing his rookie year has not slowed him down.
