NFL Trade Rumors: Why the LA Rams are perfect for Rob Gronkowski
By Jason Reed
A trade may be a longshot, but Rob Gronkowski has emerged in the NFL Trade Rumors. If he were to be dealt, the LA Rams may be the perfect fit for the tight end.
The LA Rams have been absolutely sensational this NFL offseason. Los Angeles capitalized on the NFL trade rumors, acquiring Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib, as well as signing coveted defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. The Rams went from a young, entertaining playoff-caliber team to a legitimate threat to win the Super Bowl.
There are no signs that the LA Rams are going to slow down anytime soon. The obvious next move to make is re-signing Aaron Donald. However, outside of that, the Rams have the flexibility to use their cap space and draft picks in whatever way they deem fit. There is no super glaring need; the Rams have created this luxury.
Thus, talks of Odell Beckham Jr. have emerged. Although I did hop on the hype train myself, it was prior to hearing the Giants’ asking price. Reports indicate that the Giants are asking for two first-round draft picks in exchange for Beckham. As great as he is, that is not worth it for the Rams.
However, Los Angeles may be more intrigued to use a first-round pick on another potential trade candidate; not two, just one.
Rob Gronkowski has emerged as the latest target of the offseason NFL trade rumors. Per Joseph Zucker of Bleacher Report, the Patriots may become more open to trading Gronkowski until he fully commits to returning to the organization.
When asked after Super Bowl LII, Rob Gronkowski was unable to commit to returning to football next season. Gronkowski has his fair share of injury history, so deciding to hang them up wouldn’t be a total surprise.
This has caused the NFL trade rumors that otherwise would not be present. Per Greg Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal (h/t Bobby Burak, The Big Lead) a source familiar with Belichick stated that Belichick begins to imagine life without players that won’t commit. The longer Gronkowski’s future remains in question, the more comfortable Belichick will be without him.
The NFL really is a dog-eat-dog world and Belichick embodies that perfectly. Sure, he may have one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history. But he won’t sit around hoping that he returns with no plan B.
The 49ers were the most probable candidate mentioned in the report. There was another NFC West team that was floated around, though: the LA Rams.
This makes perfect sense for the Rams and for Rob Gronkowski. The entire offseason has had one looming question regarding the Rams’ offense; who is going to replace Sammy Watkins? Watkins signed a three-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, leaving a hole in the receiving core.

The answers have been with other receivers like Beckham or even Dez Bryant. However, the answer may be Rob Gronkowski after all.
Los Angeles is thin at tight end. The Rams do have second-round pick Gerald Everett and Tyler Higbee at tight end. Both are ok but easily upgradable.
Bringing in a vertical threat like Gronkowski would fit the Rams’ offense perfectly. The entire emphasis of the offense a year ago was surrounding Jared Goff with as many tools as possible. Gronkowski would plug-in perfectly to Sean McVay’s system; becoming the Rams’ number-one red zone threat.
I would assume that the New England Patriots would ask for a first-round pick for Gronkowski. By sending some talent in return, the Rams may be able to secure the Patriots’ second-round pick.
New England currently has two second-round picks with their own and the San Francisco 49ers. Thus, they can afford to swap their second-round for the Rams’ first-round. Los Angeles could send Gerald Everett, their first-round pick and one of their five sixth-round picks in return for Rob Gronkowski and the Patriots’ second-round pick.
The only big need in the NFL Draft is at linebacker. While there are some intriguing linebackers potentially available in the first-round, the LA Rams should have no problem finding a quality starting linebacker in the second-round.
Next: Three roster holes the Rams must fill in the draft
And that is why it is the perfect scenario for the LA Rams. If Gronkowski does commit to playing, and the Patriots want to part ways, Los Angeles must show interest. Not only are they getting an offensive weapon, they can still draft that much-needed linebacker.
