6. Maurice Hurst, DT, Michigan

The other position the Los Angeles Chargers can turn to for help stopping the run is at defensive tackle. This year’s draft class is pretty deep at defensive tackle and the Chargers will have a decision to make regarding who they want to select. Of the options available, the team should only pick Maurice Hurst is he is the last big board target remaining.

A few months ago, Hurst seemed like a perfect fit in the Chargers’ defensive line. His ability to plug up running lanes would be a much-needed help. With an increased focus on Bosa and Ingram instead of him, Hurst would be able to overcome any shortcomings in the pass-rush.

The biggest overcoming being his size. At six-foot-one and under 300 pounds, Hurst is a tad undersized to be a legitimate NFL defensive tackle. There are also question marks around his health.

A heart condition was found during the NFL Combine that led to Hurst not participating in combine drills. The condition is reportedly something that Michigan was aware of and could be something that Hurst could play through.

However, Hurst’s personal health is far more important than football. When healthy, he is one of the best in the draft class. If his future is in question though, not playing in the NFL may be the wiser choice.
