Los Angeles Dodgers Beat the Streak selections — May 10
By Jason Reed
The Los Angeles Dodgers start a new series with the Cincinnati Reds that will hopefully spark the team as well as our streaks in Beat the Streak.
This is a much-needed series for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who enter Thursday night’s game with a 16-20 record. A four-game sweep here would put the Dodgers back at .500. With a series in Miami, the Dodgers have the potential to get hot and really swing the tide of the season.
Of course, this is all best-case scenario talk, but these are exactly the kind of series the team needs in order to spark something this season.
Hopefully, with the team matching up against sub-par pitching, it can also spark our Dodgers Beat the Streak streak’s as well.
Wednesday’s picks:
More from LA Sports Hub
- Lakers: 5 Players to Target Through Trades to make another championship run
- LA Chargers: Week 8 against Denver Broncos is a must-win
- LA Rams: Jared Goff wants to keep the Los Angeles title streak going
- Lakers Rumors: Los Angeles Clippers interested in Rajon Rondo
- LA Chargers: Justin Herbert wins AFC Rookie of the Month
Wednesday was a mixed bag for us, which as become a constant trend the last two weeks. One of us will pick correctly, the other will not. Because of that, neither Sarah or I have been able to extend our streaks past two or three in the last few weeks.
I went with Enrique Hernandez, who was having good at-bats and had a favorable matchup against a southpaw. Despite everything going in my favor, Hernandez went 0-5 with two strikeouts in the two-hole.
As for Sarah, she went with Chris Taylor, who registered two official at-bats in five plate appearances. Luckily, Taylor did have a hit, so her streak is off the ground.
Sarah’s pick (Current streak: One): Chase Utley
My pick for tonight’s game against the Reds is Chase Utley. Utley has such a great veteran presence in the clubhouse, but him just merely being in the dugout doesn’t help the Dodgers win baseball games. What does help them win baseball games is when he gets on base, and he’s been doing that an awful lot lately.
With the Dodgers well-known infield versatility, Utley hasn’t been starting at second as much as he did in, say, 2008 (a year in which he won the World Series with Philly.) Though Utley hasn’t been making as many game-saving plays from second this season, he’s still contributing (and not just with sage words of wisdom.) So far this season he’s appeared in 31 games, 12 of those as a pinch hitter. He’s been one of the best guys off the bench this season, just look at what he did last night against the D-Backs.
Utley’s age gets talked about a lot but the fact is, the Silver Fox can still hit. He’s far and away one of the most respectable guys on this team and I think that tonight, whether it’s in the 1st inning or in the 7th inning off the bench, Utley will help the Dodgers start this series against Cincinnati off on the right foot.
Jason’s pick (Current streak: Zero): Cody Bellinger
I am going with someone that did not register a hit in Wednesday’s contest in Cody Bellinger. After seeing a southpaw last night, Bellinger is back hitting clean-up against a right-handed pitcher.
Bellinger may not be having the season he had last year but he is still making great contact, having good at-bats and getting on base. After going hitless in last night’s contest, Bellinger is due for a big hit.
Next: The Dodgers are missing half the team
I see Bellinger getting a roped double down the right-field line that is going to score a run in the first inning for the Dodgers; acting as a trendsetter for what should be a great four-game set against the Reds.
