Triple-A: IF Breyvic Valera (MLB Pipeline team rank: NR)

  • Weekly stats: .444 AVG, 5 R

Dodgers fans know Breyvic Valera as the utility infielder that was called up when Logan Forsythe and Corey Seager took trips to the DL. In his short MLB tenure, Valera failed to make an impression. Valera was hitless in four at-bats. However, he did walk twice, so that is promising!

In Triple-A Oklahoma City this past week Valera was extremely productive and was the best overall hitter for the Dodgers. Although he did not have any power shots or RBIs, Valera was a consistent on-base machine atop the Dodgers’ lineup that helped produce runs.

Valera has the career arch of being a utility infielder that probably will not be a big league starter. While he is a career .304 hitter in the minor leagues, Valera will be best used all-around the diamond and as a pinch-hitting specialist.

Valera does have something that the Dodgers currently do not have much of: speed. If it was not for Tim Locastro, we may have seen Valera stay up in the big leagues longer to serve as a pivotal pinch runner in key situations.

However, Locastro is blistering fast and is competing with Jeren Kendall as the fastest player in the organization.

Chances are Dodgers fans will see Valera back on the big league roster at some point this season. Hopefully, nobody gets hurt and that won’t come until September.
