Los Angeles Dodgers Beat the Streak selections — May 26
By Jason Reed
The Los Angeles Dodgers head into game two of a three-game set against the San Diego Padres after a game carried by Matt Kemp offensively.
The Los Angeles Dodgers scored four runs in their win over the San Diego Padres on Friday night. On the surface, the Dodgers seemed to have a pretty good offensive night. Although the team scored four, the offense still needed improvement.
The night was carried by Matt Kemp and Enrique Hernandez. Kemp slugged a three-run home run in the first inning and had three of the Dodgers’ five total hits. The other run of the night came on a solo home run off of the bat of Hernandez.
Logan Forsythe was the only other hitter with a base knock, going 1-3 on the night. Thus, the Dodgers had more runs than they had players with base hits.
Luckily for me, I went with Kemp due to the southpaw-righty matchup and the fact that he always seems to torch the Padres. Kemp raised his season average against the Padres to .577 in seven games played.
Sarah, on the other hand, did not successfully pick one of the three players to get a hit. She went with catcher Austin Barnes, who was getting the start over Yasmani Grandal against the southpaw. Barnes with 0-3 with one strikeout.

Sarah’s pick — Current streak 0: Justin Turner
My pick for tonight is Justin Turner. Turner has yet to hit his first home run of the season. I predict tonight is the night he gets it. Even though the air is thicker at night, Turner has the power to bypass even the harshest of California fog.
On the mound for the Padres is Jordan Lyles. He’s been pretty solid so far this season, boasting a 3.11 ERA and a 1-1 record. In his career, Turner is 3-7 against Lyles, with 3 hits and 3 RBIs. Though there are players on the team who’ve played better against Lyles (Austin Barnes is batting .800 against him) I’m going to with JT at the plate tonight.
Jason’s pick — Current streak 2: Cody Bellinger
Cody Bellinger has not been great this season. Bellinger holds a .241 batting average with seven home runs, 22 RBIs and 48 strikeouts. Having twice as many strikeouts than RBIs is not a promising site, however, Bellinger is young and has plenty of time to turn the season around.
Hopefully, that turnaround can mirror a hot summer in which the Dodgers can take the division lead. Bellinger was a huge reason for the Dodgers’ success last year, it is time for him to step it up again.
With a right-handed pitcher on the mound and coming off of a hitless night, Bellinger should be primed for a base hit. Typically, when he does get a hit, Bellinger goes 1-4. Of 50 games played this season, Bellinger has just 13 multihit games (26 percent).
Next: Dodgers players of the week, May 25
Bellinger has not gotten a multihit game since May 8, so the left-handed slugger is due.
