LeBron James and LA’s biggest acquisitions of the 21st century
By Jason Reed
MLS:
Los Angeles Galaxy: David Beckham (2007)
I really wanted to include Zlatan Ibrahimovic as the LA Galaxy’s biggest signing of the century. However, although Ibrahimovic has been a huge addition to the Galaxy and easily the team’s best player, the transfer for David Beckham in 2007 raised the bar and brought legitimacy not only to the Galaxy but to the MLS as a whole.

Beckham transferring to the LA Galaxy was one of the biggest stories in all of the sports world. Although he was no longer in his prime, Beckham was one of, if not the face of English Soccer at this time and was coming off of 15 combined years at Manchester United and Real Madrid.
That is like Ronaldo transferring to the Galaxy. Although, Beckham was out of his prime and was not as good as Ronaldo.
Beckham opened the door for other legends such as Kaka, David Villa, Wayne Rooney and Ibrahimovic to play the latter stages of their careers in the United States. That is a massive win for United States soccer.
Los Angeles FC: Carlos Vela (2018)
LAFC is its inaugural year but that did not stop the new face of LA from signing some significant names. Of the several big names to suit up for LAFC this season, Carlos Vela has undoubtedly been the biggest and has arguably been LAFC’s best player.
If he is not the best player on the field, he definitely is the most marketable and was actually LAFC’s first committed signing.
Vela is second on the team within goals and assists with seven goals and five assists this season. The Mexican forward has not only served as the face of LAFC but has played up to his lofty expectations from Los Angeles soccer fans.

Of course, this could all change if LAFC lands a big name in the next transfer window. However, right now, the honors go to Carlos Vela.
