Dodgers Trade for Manny Machado: Winners and Losers
By Jamaal Artis
Winners:
Manny Machado:
Whenever a superstar player leaves a team there can be some public relations nightmares. Machado was spared that by the Orioles, instead of losing him in free agency and looking like the bad guy, Machado was traded instead. He now keeps up the goodwill he’s gained by being the face of the Orioles team.
He now gets a three-month audition with one of the premier franchises in baseball, if he continues to scorch the ball and play at his All-Star level teams including the Dodgers may back up the bank trucks to re-sign him next year.
Los Angeles Dodgers
This one is pretty obvious, but when shortstop Corey Seager went down speculation started right away that the Dodgers were going to acquire Machado. There was speculation that they would be desperate and pay a high cost.
That doesn’t seem to be the case, the Dodgers avoided giving up top prospects Gavin Lux or Dustin May. They did have to give up 21-year-old outfielder Yusniel Diaz, but the Dodgers depth at outfield made him expendable.
This is the third year in a row that the front office has made a blockbuster trade in the summer. Hopefully, this puts the bed that the team isn’t willing to do what it takes to win.
Dodgers Hitters
The Dodgers have done a good job weathering a bad start to get themselves back into first place in the NL West division. If you’re Cody Bellinger or Matt Kemp and the rest of the Dodgers hitters you now have a masher in the lineup to help boost the hitting.
Machado is hitting .315 with 24 home runs, adding that kind of hitting is going to make it harder for pitchers to pitch around the other hitters so expect the lineup to be deeper and for the hitters to get a boost from Machado’s presence.
