Let’s say neither of the two things play out in the previous two slides. Let’s say the Golden State Warriors beat the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Finals and then have some bad injury luck in the Finals and lose to the Celtics or 76ers.

Let’s say the Warriors core stays intact and the Lakers have to compete with them for one more year without already getting a title of their own. Even if that happens, and that is the worse-case scenario for the Lakers, the team is obviously gearing up for something big next offseason.

That something big could be signing Kawhi Leonard, Klay Thompson, Jimmy Butler or making a move for a star and using the cap space for more depth. Why else would the Los Angeles Lakers only sign one-year deals this offseason?

I mean, the team refused to match Julius Randle‘s offer sheet despite it being for just $18 million over two years. The front office is paying Kentavious Caldwell-Pope more this season than Randle is making.

It is because that cap space next offseason is important to the Lakers. Something is obviously planned, with or without a title this season.

Thus, even if the super team Warriors remain intact, the Lakers are going to make a move that is going to shift the landscape of the NBA.

With a growing young core, LeBron James and we will assume a 100 percent Kawhi Leonard, the Lakers would become the most talented team in the NBA.
