The Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics are the two biggest rivals in the NBA and are arguably the two biggest rivals in sports; giving the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees a run for their money.
This matchup has so many built-in storylines besides the natural Lakers-Celtics rivalry. The obvious storyline to watch in this game is the matchup between former teammates Kyrie Irving and LeBron James. While they still seem to be friends, there is a bit of an on-court rivalry as Irving opted to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers and James last season.
This is not the first matchup between the Celtics and the Lakers next season. The two sides square off in Boston on February 7, still making fans wait nearly four months before the two sides finally play each other.
What makes this matchup the more interesting one is it will be James’ first time playing the Celtics at home as a Laker. James has played in the TD Garden plenty of times and understands that dynamic, even if he has not experienced the Lakers-Celtics dynamic.
However, experiencing it at home for the first time with so much history preluding the matchup makes this such a fun game to watch and a potential Finals preview in any one of the next few years.
If the Los Angeles Lakers can land another superstar and the Boston Celtics can keep Kyrie Irving, these two sides will undoubtedly meet in an NBA Finals in the next few years and add yet another chapter in league’s longest story. LeBron James vs. Kyrie Irving.
