Chargers: The two important position battles of the preseason finale
By Jason Reed
2. The battle at kicker:
The position battle at the kicker position is easily the most important for the Los Angeles Chargers this preseason. While it is the most important, it is going to be the most boring to watch, as watching field goals in a meaningless game is really hard to market as “entertainment”.

However, it was the kicking department that ultimately held the Chargers out of the postseason last season and could have prevented a deep Super Bowl push. By season’s end, the Chargers were one of the hottest teams in the NFL and easily could have surprised many and found themselves representing the AFC.
I would not say a good kicker is the only difference between a Super Bowl caliber team, however, it is very important for the Chargers to make the right decision this time around.
Last season, the team opted to go with rookie kicker, Younghoe Koo, who did not last the season. This move prompted the team to cut Josh Lambo, who was signed to the Jacksonville Jaguars, had a career year and even nailed the game-winner against the Chargers.
This year, it is between former Philadelphia Eagles kicker Caleb Sturgis and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker Roberto Aguayo. Sturgis was the safer pick heading into the preseason, however, Aguayo may be winning the battle entering the last game.
Either way, I guarantee both guys will get chances and will likely split the games into halves, making every kick meaningful.
