The Los Angeles Clippers could be on the brink of acquiring the team’s next star as Jimmy Butler has requested a trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The next NBA superstar trade could be happening very soon as Jimmy Butler has requested a trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves after meeting with team brass. Naturally, the Los Angeles Clippers have emerged as potential suitors for Jimmy Buckets.

Shams Charania of The Athletic first reported the news that Butler had requested a trade from Minnesota. In Charania’s report, it is understood that Butler has given the Timberwolves a list of three teams that he would be willing to sign a contract extension with.

While Minnesota does not have to reach an agreement with any of those three teams, the team will get significantly more in return if it is understood that Butler will sign an extension. If only one year is guaranteed, the Timberwolves will get a below average trade return.

While the three teams have not been named, the Los Angeles Clippers have to be in the running. Alongside the Los Angeles Lakers, the Clippers become a destination simply because of the LA factor.

However, the team is also a great fit for Butler and he could be the face of the franchise moving forward that the Clippers can build around.

The Los Angeles Clippers are set to have $47 million in practical cap space next summer, per Spotrac. By trading certain contracts away, the Clippers would have more than enough to trade for Butler, sign an extension and bring in another rumored star, such as Kawhi Leonard.

All of a sudden the Los Angeles Clippers could become the team to beat in Los Angeles and could start an epic rivalry with LeBron James, the Lakers and whatever star the team opts to bring in alongside him.

The Clippers have the perfect situation and have the trade pieces to get this done. Here is the perfect deal to make the Timberwolves pull the trigger.

The Timberwolves arguably could get better for Jimmy Butler but with the limited possible suitors, the Los Angeles Clippers deal may become the best on the table.

The Clippers would almost undoubtedly have to part ways with 2018 first-round pick Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is an extremely promising point guard with a massive ceiling. However, the Clippers are so deep at guard that the Clippers would have time for a long-term plan.

Danilo Gallinari is a big contract that would help this trade become possible but could still be a good piece for Minnesota if he stays healthy.

The Clippers would also have to throw in two draft picks as well but they would have to be future picks with the status of their own picks still up in the air for potentially the next two seasons.

This would demonstrate a “look towards the future” mentality for the Timberwolves but the team is young and has time to grow together. Perhaps Gilgeous-Alexander and Karl Anthony-Towns can be the next superstar 1-2 duo in three years. If Andrew Wiggins lives up to his potential, that could be the making of a huge big three.

Minnesota has no shot to contend with or without Butler this season and may be better suited to bring in a young piece rather than swap star for star like the San Antonio Spurs and Toronto Raptors did.

Either way, the situation is perfect for the Los Angeles Clippers to slide in and find the franchise’s next superstar to build around.
