This trade would be an interesting one as it would be just as big of a cap hit as the Antonio Brown trade. This could rule it out with the Chargers needing to address Melvin Gordon and Joey Bosa‘s contracts in the near future.

However, with Philip Rivers potentially retiring after his current contract is up, the Chargers might be able to afford Gordon, Bosa and Gerald McCoy with a rookie quarterback contract under center. Plus, it seems unlikely that Bosa will even re-sign with the Chargers when that time comes and he might go play with his brother, wherever he is drafted.

Either way, the Los Angeles Chargers have a lot of things to consider when discussing for Gerald McCoy. One thing is certain: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers should be looking to trade McCoy and his contract this offseason in order to gain flexibility in the coming seasons.

McCoy has just under a $48.5 million cap hit combined over the next three seasons, $13 million of which being in 2019. There really is no reason for a team like the Buccaneers, who are in no spot to contend, to want to keep that contract around.

This asking price is slightly higher than Trevathan because McCoy is under contract for three more years. The Chargers can send the 60th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and a future third-round pick.

Draft picks are valuable in the NFL but it would be worth it to snag McCoy to replace the myriad of free agent defensive tackles in Los Angeles.

Adding a big run stuffer like McCoy to a defensive line that already consists of Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram on the ends is a recipe for success.
