Why the Los Angeles Chargers would do it:

The discussion on who is going to take over the Los Angeles Chargers once Philip Rivers’ retires has been a discussion over the last two years. Rivers’ contract is expiring after this season but he probably still has at least 2-3 quality years left in him.

However, there is a chance that the Chargers would want to move on from Rivers once his contract is up, which really accelerates the need to bring in a successor. This is an untraditional way of doing it but the Chargers could trade for last year’s 10th overall pick in Josh Rosen.

We never really see NFL teams do this but with the Cardinals having the first overall pick and a new head coach, there is a chance that the team is going to select Kyler Murray to be the quarterback of the future, which leaves Rosen just hanging there.

The Cardinals, despite Rosen being a top-10 pick from a year ago, would not have a ton of leverage in this situation as every NFL team would know that they are desperate to trade Rosen.

That is where the Chargers can swoop in and not even trade a first-round pick in this year’s draft and instead extend that to next season. This allows the Chargers to still add to the team this year in the first-round and gives the front office and entire year to prep with no first-round pick.

Cornerback Trevor Williams would be a loss but the Chargers have been great in finding mid-round cornerbacks and can replace him in this year’s draft. The Cardinals need help at corner, so he is a nice piece to throw in to avoid sending a 2019 first.

Rosen, who was not great in his rookie year, would be relegated back to the bench but would have the luxury of having a great young team around him and a veteran quarterback to guide him.

Next. Verrett deserves one more chance. dark

Plus he gets to go back to Los Angeles, where he thrived in college as a UCLA Bruin.
