Eric Weddle was recently released by the Baltimore Ravens and now has many Los Angeles Chargers fans asking for a reunion.

Eric Weddle was one of the most popular players on the Los Angeles Chargers (then San Diego Chargers) before his departure from the team after the 2015 season.

The bearded safety was one of the best safeties in the league, was a hard-hitter and was an all-around great player for the Chargers in his nine-year career in San Diego. Weddle proved himself to Charger fans and even after he left he was still a beloved player.

Weddle agreed to a four-year, $26 million contract with the Baltimore Ravens prior to the 2016 season. That was not a massive contract for someone of Weddle’s caliber but he certainly was not going to go back to the Chargers, regardless of what they offered.

The tensions between Weddle and the Chargers were high. And as a Charger fan myself, I can attest that the team was in fault and that Weddle deserved better.

The straw that broke the proverbial camel’s back was when Weddle’s daughter was performing on-field during a halftime show in San Diego. The 3-10 Chargers were defeating the Miami Dolphins 23-0 at half.

Weddle went and watched his daughter perform in the halftime show. The team was not making the playoffs regardless and it is not every day that your daughter gets to perform at halftime of an NFL game.

The Chargers slapped Weddle with a $10,000 fine following the incident and put the safety on the injured reserve for the last game of the season. The team was “following team policy” but did so in a sour, sour way.

Now, after the Baltimore Ravens released Weddle for cap space in the last year of his contract, many Charger fans are dreaming of this scenario in which Weddle comes home to the Chargers and creates a great safety pairing with Derwin James.

Would it be a great 1-2 punch at safety? Absolutely. It is impossible to refute that.

Weddle is never going to come back to the Chargers, though, even if he does not plan to retire. Heck, I would not be surprised if Weddle actually retires if the Chargers are the only team knocking at his door, which they won’t be.

Next. Chargers should add Josh Rosen. dark

The Los Angeles Chargers already burned their bridges with Weddle and should not expect him to re-embrace the team with open arms. Don’t get excited at all about Weddle potentially being a Charger, it is not going to happen.
