The Los Angeles Chargers recently released safety Jahleel Addae and have gotten all the fans’ hopes up that Earl Thomas will come to Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Chargers had one of the most exciting defenses to watch last season. Although the defense was not perfect, a defense with Derwin James, Desmond King, Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram is one to watch out for.

There were some defensive holes for the Chargers entering the offseason, though. The team was able to patch one by re-signing middle linebacker Denzel Perryman but still need to address defensive tackle as well as outside linebacker.

Another area the team needs to address that was not a hole when the offseason started is at safety. Los Angeles obviously has the best safety of the future in Derwin James but has a hole alongside him after releasing veteran safety Jahleel Addae.

Addae had his moments on the Chargers but for the most part, was a headache. Addae always seemed to let the big play happen when the Chargers most needed a stop and he seemed like an outsider on this stellar defense.

After the release, the idea of free agent Earl Thomas joining the Chargers has picked up some steam. The Chargers have been named as a dark horse in the Thomas sweepstakes, which is obviously headlined by the Dallas Cowboys.

There are some natural reasons for why Thomas would want to join the Chargers. First of all, this defense would be extremely fun to play with and playing alongside an already great secondary and pass-rush would give Thomas flashbacks of the Legion of Boom.

Second of all, Gus Bradley, who was Thomas’ defensive coordinator during the Legion of Boom, is the defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers. Talk about a nice fit.

However, nothing will come of these reports of the Chargers being the dark horse for Thomas. The team has never been one to spend significant money on an outside free agent and this is no different. Plus, Thomas is coming off of a pretty bad injury, which naturally presents a big risk.

The Chargers are not going to be able to outbid the Cowboys and Thomas should be inclined to go to the team he has been tied with for over a year if they are offering the most money. As fun as Thomas on the Chargers would be, it simply is not how the team usually operates.

Instead, I would expect the Chargers to either try to find a gem on a one-year deal, as they did with Tre Boston in 2017 or even use a first or second-round pick on a safety. This would give the Los Angeles Chargers two young safeties that could serve as the anchors of the defense moving forward.
