Los Angeles Rams would be smart to sign Blake Bortles

The Los Angeles Rams have not been as active this offseason as the team was a year ago but could be signing a high-profile name in quarterback Blake Bortles.

The Los Angeles Rams made a lot of headlines last year during the offseason when the team brought in a nice foursome of Marcus Peters, Aqib Talib, Ndamukong Suh and Brandin Cooks. Because of their aggressive approach last year, many fans expected something similar out of the team in 2019.

That has not been the case thus far this offseason. While the Rams have made some additions, there has seemingly been more subtractions than additions this time around.

Eric Weddle has been the team’s biggest external addition and he is a nice replacement for Lamarcus Joyner. While Weddle swears that he has not yet entered his prime, the numbers say otherwise and the Rams likely won’t be getting an All-Pro at safety.

The other notable signing the team has made is a re-signing — re-signing outside linebacker Dante Fowler Jr to a one-year deal. This was a good signing, as the Rams are weak at linebacker.

With Rodger Saffold, Lamarcus Joyner, Mark Barron and likely Ndamukong Suh leaving, it is understandable if Ram fans are frustrated with the offseason thus far.

And while it is not the most intriguing signing and won’t be a season changer, the Rams are set to visit with quarterback Blake Bortles, who was recently released from the Jacksonville Jaguars, on Monday.

This probably won’t change anyone’s opinion on the offseason as Bortles is going to serve as Jared Goff’s backup and might not see any time during the 2019 season. And while that would be the case, it would be pretty smart for the Rams to bring Bortles in as the team’s backup.

The main reason is Sean McVay. McVay helped Goff tremendously in overcoming a lackluster rookie season and Goff has been a top-five quarterback statistically the last two years.

McVay is not going to turn Bortles into an All-Pro but he does have potential there and could still be a good quarterback in the league; think of Nick Foles on the Philadelphia Eagles.

Bortles could be groomed with McVay and if something ever does happen to Goff the team would have comfort knowing they have a quarterback with experience that would do just enough to put the team in a spot to win.

And then, which is the best-case scenario, the Rams could look to flip Bortles to a desperate team that needs a quarterback next season for a third-round pick, as the Baltimore Ravens did with Joe Flacco.

And even if he does not touch the playing field in 2019 it is a positive for the Los Angeles Rams knowing that they are not completely lost if Goff goes out.
