2017 NBA Draft:

This one might receive some heat as Lonzo Ball really is not that loved within the Lakers’ fanbase. While the opinion on him is better than it was a year ago, Ball has not been the most popular Laker for a multitude of reasons.

More from LA Sports Hub

First, his father went on every sports media show, pumping his son up and making himself the star of the show instead of Lonzo’s basketball ability. That outlandish behavior and high expectations that ensued could not be delivered on.

Ball was also the point guard that was selected to take over for D’Angelo Russell. At the time is was fine but as Russell has slowly grown into an all-star, Laker fans have looked for Lonzo to do the same, although Lonzo is two years behind Russell.

Lonzo Ball was the right pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. The one glaring name that people will be quick to mention is Jayson Tatum, who has been better in his young career than Ball has been thus far.

However, the Lakers needed a point guard. They needed someone that they knew could run the offense, push the tempo and it was a bonus that Ball was a contributor in more areas than one.

While Tatum is a great player, who knows how he would fair right now needed to share minutes alongside Ingram, LeBron James and Kyle Kuzma at two forward positions.

The Lakers could have made it work, sure, but selecting an all-around point guard that could blossom into an All-Defensive player with 10 assists per game was the right pick to make.
