There is a chance that the Los Angeles Chargers could trade down in the 2019 NFL Draft and have one glaring team that makes the most sense.

The Los Angeles Chargers had the joint-best record in the AFC and made it to the AFC Divisional Round of the playoffs before being bounced by the New England Patriots in convincing fashion.

As the team with the best record that lost in the Divisional Round, the Chargers will select 28th in the 2019 NFL Draft, 11 spots higher than the team selected a year ago and 21 spots higher than two years ago.

The Chargers have been phenomenal in the draft over the last decade and the last four years, in particular, have been excellent. Melvin Gordon, Joey Bosa, Mike Williams and Derwin James are all huge parts of this team, three of which are All-Pro caliber at their best.

With that in mind, and the fact that the Chargers might be one big piece away from winning it all, it would seem like the team would not want to trade its first-round pick and instead would make the most of the selection.

However, that does not seem like it will be the case as the door is open for the Chargers to trade down in the draft.

General manager Tom Telesco stated that the Chargers are open to trading down in the draft, as they are every year. Telesco also went on to state that the Chargers would need to make sure they get the proper return if they do indeed trade out of the first round and that they should not move too far back in the order.

By the way that he said it, it does not fully indicate that the Chargers are trading down. Telesco is taking the smart approach of saying the team is always open to it, if the deal is right.

The difference between this year and previous years, though, is that the Chargers can afford to trade out of the first round and have the perfect team to target to see if they want to move up to the 28th overall pick. That team: the Indianapolis Colts.

The trade that we have in minds includes two second-round picks for the Chargers’ one pick, which is a fair price considering how much teams usually pay to move up just in the first round.

The key here is that the Colts own the Jets’ second-round pick, which is 34th overall. If there is a player that the team loves with the 28th pick, and they know they won’t fall, it would be extremely worth it to trade an asset that isn’t even theirs to move up six spots.

And that is why this package is only two second-round picks, after all, they are only moving up six spots. However, those six spots are valuable and trading both the Jets and their own pick would definitely be enough to convince the Chargers to move down.

And for the Los Angeles Chargers, this makes a ton of sense. Adding that extra pick in the first two rounds, and maybe even a late-round pick if they are lucky, will help the team in its pursuit of adding impact players while also bolstering the depth of the offensive line.

Plus, unless there is a player that the team absolutely loves and knows will not fall to the second round, the Chargers can afford to move down and likely select the same player they would have anyways.

If the Los Angeles Chargers actually do trade down in the draft, and it is certainly a possibility, every Charger fan should be watching what the Colts are doing and who the team could be interested in on draft night.
