Los Angeles Clippers have a better chance at Kevin Durant than you think
By Jason Reed
The Los Angeles Clippers are one of several teams expected to make big moves this upcoming offseason and might just make the biggest move of the summer.
The Los Angeles Clippers‘ gameplan to create a contender was always centered around this upcoming offseason. An offseason in which the Clippers had enough cap space to bring in some stars and had a successful executive, Jerry West, running the show.
On the way to a potentially exciting summer, the Clippers found themselves as a playoff team. A group of role-playing guys that were not expected to escape the NBA lottery started off hot and never wavered.
Even trading Tobias Harris did not slow the Clippers down as the team held its own and entered the NBA Playoffs as an eighth seed. Although the team ultimately fell to the Golden State Warriors, as expected, they put up a much bigger fight than expected and took the champs to six games.

The biggest storyline of that series was Kevin Durant taking over the series and looking like the best player on the planet. It is fitting for Durant to do so, as he is heading to free agency and many people expect him to be on a different team to start 2019.
Having a dominant NBA Playoffs performance would prove what he has been trying to prove all along: that he is the new best player in basketball. Joining the Warriors obviously hurt that narrative.
Surprisingly, Durant has not really been connected to the Los Angeles Clippers. The New York Knicks appear to be the frontrunners for Durant with no real other team seeming to make that much sense.
For the Clippers, Kawhi Leonard appears to be the most likely target. Even though the team has enough cap space to shave for a second superstar, Durant really has not been in the discussion. His mini-feud with Patrick Beverley also might have hurt those chances as well.
However, there really is no reason to rule the Los Angeles Clippers out. And when you consider all of the qualifying factors, the Clippers actually make a lot of sense for Durant.
First and foremost, the Clippers are being overseen by Jerry West, the same executive that is widely responsible for creating the juggernaut that is the Golden State Warriors. There is a sense of familiarity there as well as comfort as Durant knows that West knows what he is doing, something the Knicks have not showcased.
Second of all, this allows Durant to stay in California and continue to expand his outside of basketball brand. New York is definitely good for this as well but Durant could bolster his Hollywood career and open up the same doors that LeBron James is opening in LA.
Speaking of James, this gives Durant the perfect rivalry to go one-on-one with James and potentially prove that he is the best basketball player in the planet.
Finally, Durant should be much more interested in staying in the Western Conference. While the West is more talented from top to bottom, the East is more top-heavy.
The Milwaukee Bucks and Philadelphia 76ers are going to be at the top of the food chain for some time. If the Boston Celtics can keep Kyrie Irving they are up there as well.
When you consider the West, there is a much easier path at the top with a Warriors team without Durant. Out of all of the teams in the West, the Clippers make the most sense.
Durant is not going to play in the shadow of LeBron and the only other teams in the West with enough cap space to sign Durant are the Dallas Mavericks and Sacramento Kings. The Mavericks, though, are going to have much less cap space with Kristaps Porzingis being a restricted free agent this summer.
Durant can be a part of a two-superstar acquisition by a team this summer either by the Knicks or the Clippers, that is it.
With no other top dog in the Western Conference if he leaves the Warriors, it seems like a very easy decision to ditch the Knicks and instead sign with the Los Angeles Clippers.
