1. Jerry Tillery is a top-five defensive rookie

It is hard to be anything but excited for the first two selections that the Los Angeles Chargers made in the 2019 NFL Draft. The team really could not have done it any other way in the first two rounds and set themselves up perfectly for success.

Of course, this does not guarantee success as sometimes the most fail-proof selections even come back to bite. However, the Chargers’ first two rounds of the draft will not lead to disappointment and will only lead to exciting play.

The first of pick of the draft, Jerry Tillery, is someone that could be viewed as a risky pick but will be anything but that.

Jerry Tillery is a guy that has a massive ceiling but looked otherwise unproductive at times at Notre Dame. If Tillery would have constantly played like has played when he was at his best, he might have been a top-15, if not a top-10 pick.

That is why he fell so low to the Chargers and that is a legitimate concern. However, Tillery plays in a defense where there is so much focus on other areas of the game that he is not only going to get better matchups but is going to learn and adapt from the guys around him.

Like a superstar basketball player joining a good team, the greatness of the Chargers defense will bring out the best of Tillery, who will end up being one of the five-best defensive rookies out of a class that was defense-heavy in 2019.
