3. Easton Stick never sniffs the field as the Chargers’ starting quarterback

One of the more eye-grabbing that the Los Angeles Chargers made in the 2019 NFL Draft was selecting quarterback Easton Stick in the fifth round. Stick was the successor to Carson Wentz at North Dakota State University and led the team to an FCS title in his senior year.

More from LA Sports Hub

Stick has been praised for his demeanor and his will to win. He was also one of the more athletic quarterbacks in the draft and comes from a run-pass option background system, which fits what the NFL is evolving into.

This has sparked the conversation of whether or not the Chargers just secretly drafted their quarterback of the future in the fifth round. While that is a fun conversation to have, Charger fans do not ever have to get used to the idea of Stick being the successor to Philip Rivers.

Because he won’t be. Stick has an impressive resume from NDSU and certainly has elite athleticism for a quarterback. However, he struggles in the most important aspect of being a quarterback: passing.

Stick can make the routine plays but did not show the ability to make things happen with his arm in college. Instead, he tended to make things happen with his legs.

Matthew Stanley of Bolts from the Blue made the point that Stick’s elite athleticism could lead to him playing a Taysom Hill-like role for the Chargers, which absolutely appears to be the reasoning behind this selection.

Stick’s great athleticism and leadership skills could make him an impact player not only on the special teams unit but also in unique packages where he comes in almost like a wildcat running back.

Stick is not the guy to put the weight of the franchise on. However, he is someone that could open up the playbook and make the offense even better as early as 2019.
