Los Angeles Clippers have the ammo for Anthony Davis but shouldn’t fire
By Jason Reed
The Los Angeles Clippers have an extremely promising and exciting summer ahead of them and have the pieces to potentially make a blockbuster move.
The Los Angeles Clippers are geared up for a very special summer that could completely reinvent the Clippers franchise and actually make the team the favorite in the Western Conference. With enough cap space to realistically sign two stars, Los Angeles looks as good as anyone for 2019.
Of course, that is assuming that the Clippers actually make use of the salary cap space and do not strike out on the biggest stars in free agency. Right now, it appears as if Kawhi Leonard could come to the Clippers, however, that is not a surefire thing.
The Los Angeles Lakers are always a threat to lure players to them instead and the New York Knicks also offer two max spots. However, with such a deep free agent class this offseason, it is hard to see the Clippers coming up empty-handed.

If the team does come up empty-handed, or is worried about that happening, there a world in which they explore a trade for the biggest trade chip this summer, Anthony Davis.
It has recently become a talking point in the NBA circle that the Los Angeles Clippers actually have one of the best offers for Davis. The offer would be somewhere along the lines of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Landry Shamet, Danilo Gallinari, Montrezl Harrell, 2019 first-round pick and the Miami Heat 2021 first-round pick.
That is a pretty loaded trade package that includes two promising guards, a great player on an expiring contract, a solid two-way player in Harrell as well as a mid-round first-round pick this year and one of the most valuable future picks in the NBA.
It would not be shocking to see the New Orleans Pelicans take that deal for just one year of Davis. However, just because the Pelicans would make that deal does not mean that the Clippers should make it happen.
First of all, Davis can opt out of his contract after the first year and there is a very real possibility that the only reason he wants to be in LA is to play with LeBron. Even if that doesn’t happen, the Clippers would be sending a huge package for someone that is not guaranteed to be on the team for two seasons.
Second of all, the Clippers after that package still would not be all that great. Granted, the team would have some cap space to work with to bring players around Davis, but it only gives them more work to do.
The team is getting rid of their second-best player in Gallinari, one of the best young point guards in SGA, a huge bench piece in Shamet and one of the most important glue guys in Harrell.
The roster is already seeing a lot of departures this summer and that would leave Davis with a group headlined by Lou Williams, Jerome Robinson and Ivica Zubac if he even gets re-signed, as he is a restricted free agent.
Again, that would not be the final product as the team has money to spend, but it is much easier to add a star and role players or two stars to the current roster as is.
Trading for Anthony Davis is a fun dream scenario and definitely is one that the Los Angeles Clippers could make happen. That does not mean it should happen.
