Los Angeles Lakers: The head coach that should be hired but won’t be
By Jason Reed
The search for the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers has certainly been a wild one and will likely lead to the team hiring the wrong person for the job.
Isn’t it fitting? Just like everything surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers over the last year or so, the search for a new head coach has been an absolute circus. We really should not be surprised.
Just a few days ago it appeared that it was all but a lock that Tyronn Lue would be the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. Some fans rejoiced, and for those fans, Wednesday was either a great or bad day.
That is because it was reported that Lue rejected the Lakers contract offer and that the two sides are no longer in discussions. The great part of this is simple: no Lue for those who did not want him as head coach.

The bad part of this is also simple: the possible replacement could be Jason Kidd. And if it is not Kidd, it likely still will not be all that important.
The Lakers are entering arguably the most important summer in recent franchise history and need a head coach that can not only help develop these young players but be good enough for the team to contend for a title.
Kidd is not the answer and the other names that have been circling are not all that impressive either. Quite frankly, there is one option that has all the chops required to be a successful head coach, yet the Lakers probably won’t hire her.
Becky Hammon, assistant coach of the San Antonio Spurs, is exactly what the Lakers need and likely won’t get.
Hammon is coming from one of the most well-ran sports organizations in the entire country. The San Antonio Spurs have a winning identity and culture and the minds behind that operation are absolutely brilliant.
Hammon not only gained knowledge under head coach Gregg Popovich but was already rich in basketball knowledge as well. Pau Gasol went out of his way to praise how good of a coach Hammon is how deep her basketball knowledge runs.
It is not a stretch to say that in a decade every NBA team that did hire Hammon when they had a chance will be kicking themselves. She still has a ton to prove and like any coach is not a guarantee, but getting a genius basketball mind from the Spurs is about as close to a guarantee as you can get.
The Lakers will be one of those teams kicking themselves. Although there is a natural storyline there with Jeannie Buss being one of the few involved female NBA owners, this is a fit that will never come to fruition.
It fortunately likely won’t have to do with gender in the Lakers’ case because of Buss. However, it is a shame that there is no steam around Hammon being the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.
That likely means that there is no connection there, which of course, means the hiring will never happen.
