Los Angeles Clippers don’t actually need Klay Thompson if interested
By Jason Reed
There have been rumblings that Klay Thompson is unhappy with his role on the Golden State Warriors, which opens the door to join the Los Angeles Clippers.
The Los Angeles Clippers are looking to sign two stars this summer and may have just added another name to the list that nobody expected to be available.
Stephen A. Smith reported on ESPN that inside sources informed him that Thompson is unhappy with getting the “crumbs” on the Golden State Warriors behind Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant.
This is huge news because it appeared to be a foregone conclusion that Thompson would re-sign with the Warriors this offseason, especially if Durant leaves as the team would have the salary cap space to sign Thompson.

However, now there exists a reality where the Warriors lose both Durant and Thompson, which would be a massive loss and would send the team on a very drastic fall from grace unless they did something about it.
To put the icing on the cake, ESPN basketball insider Adrian Wojnarowski said on ESPN’s Get up! that if Thompson did, in fact, want out of the Warriors that people should be looking at the Los Angeles Clippers, not the Los Angeles Lakers.
That is understandably making Clipper fans excited. Thompson is one of the three best shooters in the NBA and can play lockdown defense while also being the perfect complimenting player to whoever the Clippers bring in as the marquee guy.
The idea of Kawhi Leonard and Thompson both on the Los Angeles Clippers is definitely an exciting one.
The only thing is that the Los Angeles Clippers do not really need to sign Klay Thompson. It sounds crazy, I know, but based on what the team already has, especially under the preface that Leonard might join the team, signing Thompson would only make it difficult for rotations and minutes.
The team is already heavy at guard and is going to look to get Shai Gilgeous-Alexander a good portion of minutes and hopefully we should see an uptick in minutes for Jerome Robinson. Plus, sixth man Lou Williams is naturally going to get a good portion of minutes, which only complicates things.
You could make the case for playing Thompson as a three but that won’t really be possible with both Danilo Gallinari and Leonard.
If Thompson is the marquee signing then the Clippers could make it work and start him at shooting guard and then also run him at small forward when Williams is on the court. However, a team with Thompson as the number one guy probably is not going to win an NBA Title.
