2. Number 8

The number eight is starting to be associated with Hall of Fame talent, and it is likely that one player currently wearing it will see it hang in the Staples Center with another number eight.

Troy Aikman and Teemu Selanne both wore number eight in their Hall of Fame careers here in Southern California. Aikman wore the number as the starting quarterback at UCLA in the late 80s, Aikman was named the nation’s top quarterback, winning the Davey O’Brien award before being inducted into the College Football Hall Fame.

Selanne wore his number eight on the ice in Anaheim in two different stints with the Anaheim Ducks. Selanne would end up scoring more goals and points than any player in franchise history was a member of their only Stanley Cup winning team and became the first player to have their number retired.

Kobe Bryant wore the number eight his first 11 seasons with the Lakers, in this iteration, Bryant was young and brash teaming with Shaquille O’Neal to lead the Lakers to three straight NBA titles at the beginning of the new millennium.  Bryant’s number eight is in the rafters of the Staples Center, and it may soon be joined by another number eight.

Drew Doughty has worn the number eight for his entire career with the Los Angeles Kings and in that time he has become the greatest Kings defensemen. Doughty has been a member of two Stanley Cup championship teams, he’s played the most games as a defenseman, and by the end of his next season will be the points leader for defensemen.
