Los Angeles Clippers: Kyrie Irving rumors are great for the Clippers
By Jason Reed
Although Kyrie Irving does not have any ties to the Los Angeles Clippers, the recent rumors around the star point guard are great for LA.
The Los Angeles Clippers are hoping to sign at least one superstar this summer and have the cap flexibility to realistically shave some space and sign two max superstars.
Because of this, and due to the fact that the Clippers were the most surprising team in the league last year, the Clippers have been connected to the best names available. Kawhi Leonard, Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson are all realistic signings for the Clippers to make.
One name that has not been connected to the Clippers despite being one of the biggest stars in the league is Kyrie Irving. Irving has had literally no ties to the Clippers, who have a surplus of guards, but the rumors and reports regarding him are just as impactful to the Clippers.

The recent rumors, per Rich Bucher, is that Irving has narrowed his list of potential teams down to the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets.
Why is this important? The other team that has been heavily favored to sign Irving leading up to the offseason is the New York Knicks. Why is that important for the Los Angeles Clippers? Because so is Kevin Durant.
The hypothetical dream situation that Knick fans and NBA fans have pitched over the last few months is Durant and Irving both signing with the New York Knicks to create the newest super team.
The Knicks are the biggest competition to the Clippers this summer, at least salary-cap wise, and getting both Durant and Irving would give the Knicks the better offseason, regardless of what the Clippers did.
However, if Kyrie goes to the Lakers or the Nets, there is a good chance that the Knicks also miss out on Kevin Durant. Owner James Dolan already doesn’t have the best track record with star players and not having a star to sign with could sway Durant the other direction.
And while there is a chance that the Knicks could trade for Anthony Davis, the most likely thing to get Durant to come to New York is Kyrie Irving.
So suddenly Durant has new options to consider and what is a better option than playing with Kawhi Leonard in the second-largest market in the United States on a team with talent, future assets and Jerry West; the same person that helped build the Golden State Warriors’ dynasty.
There is still a long ways to go until NBA free agency and the worst thing to do is get ahead of yourself.
However, if the recent reports about Kyrie Irving are true, then the Los Angeles Clippers chances of accomplishing their goal just got a lot higher.
