More NBA free agency bombs were dropped on Sunday night as it was announced that the Los Angeles Clippers re-signed Patrick Beverley.

The first official day of free agency has been as chaotic as it was advertised leading up to it. Reports were literally surfacing by the minute and it was announced at 10:20 p.m. PDT that the Los Angeles Clippers had made their first move of the frenzy.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Clippers struck an agreement with point guard Patrick Beverley on a three-year, $40 million contract to stay in LA.

The news came at a surprising time not only because the biggest focus right now is what Kawhi Leonard is going to do but also because it did not seem like Beverley was returning to Los Angeles. Now he is, and if the Clippers get Kawhi, they can be extremely scary defensively.

The idea of a defense that has Beverley, Leonard and Montrezl Harrell all on the court at the same time is definitely a fun one to imagine. However, Beverley is not as good of a signing as the fanbase would like to admit.

Beverley is a fan-favorite, and rightfully so. His brash style of play and elite defense is something that is extremely entertaining to watch as a fan. He might not be a Stephen Curry-like player and drain threes left and right but he is someone that can make any grown man upset by jawing at him.

Beverley is great in his role and it is impossible to deny that. There is a reason that he has two All-Defensive honors under his belt, one of which was First-Team honors.

The biggest thing to keep in mind with the Clippers when it comes to Beverley is what the team currently has and what it needs to add. Right now, the Clippers are fairly deep in the backcourt and really did not need to add another spoke to that wheel.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the future of the point guard position for the Clippers and already showed extremely positive signs in his rookie year. Lou Williams is the best sixth man in basketball and Landry Shamet and Jerome Robinson both present young and productive bench options.

Not to mention that Tyrone Wallace and Sindarius Thornwell are on the roster, although those are not the best guys in the world.

Where the Clippers are lacking is at center and that is what the team should have focused on with that cap space. Say what you will about Beverley, he is not worth $40 million over three years; this being especially true because of the Clippers’ current situation.

The Los Angeles Clippers still have enough salary cap space to make a run at Kawhi Leonard and add other pieces as well. It would have been a lot easier without the $40 million contract that is now attached to Beverley’s name.

Next. The epic LA rivalry that is waiting to happen. dark

Patrick Beverley certain brings a lot to the table and he is worth three years and $40 million to a team that needs a starting, defensive-minded point guard. However, for the Los Angeles Clippers, that money would have been much better off used elsewhere.
