Los Angeles Chargers: Why 2019 could be Philip Rivers’ best season yet
By Jason Reed
The Los Angeles Chargers are looking to build on what was a successful 2018 season, which could mean an even better season out of Philip Rivers.
The Los Angeles Chargers had a wildly successful year in 2018. While the team may have ultimately come up short of the main goal, which is winning the Super Bowl, the team had a very impressive season that will prove to be a building block for years to come.
The Chargers had the joint-best record in the AFC, alongside the Kansas City Chiefs, and had some of the most impressive wins of the season. Most notably, the Chargers had road wins against the Seattle Seahawks, Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers.
To put that in perspective, since 2013 the Seahawks have the second-best home record, the Chiefs fourth and the Steelers fifth.

Those are the kind of results that a young team like the Chargers can build on for the future. That is why the team is primed for even more success in 2019 and why this upcoming season has is so exciting for Charger fans.
Not only is it exciting for the team as a whole, but it is especially exciting for quarterback Philip Rivers. Rivers will not only be getting one of his last chances at a Super Bowl ring but is going to be exceptional while doing it.
There is going to be a fire that is under Rivers that is going to lead to his best season yet. We all know he has the weapons in both the passing game and the running game to put up numbers and the offensive line, as long as it stays healthy, is going to be a much-needed help.
It is not like Rivers is regressing, either. Last season he put together his second-best completion rate while throwing 30 or more touchdowns and 12 or fewer interceptions for the fourth time; three of which coming since 2013.
Old age really has not slowed Rivers down and it has instead been the team around him that made his numbers mediocre in the middle of his career. This is probably the best team Rivers has had in his career outside of the 14-2 2006 squad, and that is saying something.
Most importantly, Rivers has a defense that is going to take the ball away a ton and is going to give the Chargers’ offense plenty of time to be on the field instead of the sideline. That is going to lead to inflated numbers for Rivers.
Rivers was already in the MVP discussion this past year and if the Chargers would have beaten the Baltimore Ravens and won the AFC West then the debate between him and Patrick Mahomes would have been much closer (although it probably would have gone to Drew Brees).
Rivers can play at an MVP level and had some clutch moments during the 2018 season. A lot of football fans love him and his antics and he is going to get a ton of momentum in 2019 as America’s quarterback.
The Los Angeles Chargers are primed for a fun and successful year and right in the middle of it will be Philip Rivers, who is going to put up career numbers and get the recognition he deserves.
