Los Angeles Clippers: Tyson Chandler would be a smart depth option
By Jason Reed
Although the Los Angeles Clippers re-signed center Ivica Zubac, the front office should still be looking to add depth at the center position.
The Los Angeles Clippers made two massive additions last week as the team not only fulfilled the hope of signing Kawhi Leonard but also shocked the NBA and traded for Paul George without any prior reports.
Now, the Clippers send their superstar duo to go toe-to-toe with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, James Harden and Russell Westbrook and the array of superstar duos in the league.
It is actually pretty nice when the league is this balanced, although the Los Angeles Clippers appear to have the best chance at winning the NBA Title because of Leonard’s status as one of the league’s best and the team’s smothering defense.

The Clippers still do not have a complete roster even though they have a very talented seven-eight man rotation, which is all you need in the playoffs.
In the regular season, you want to build a rotation that is deep in all areas to help keep the main contributors healthy and survive the grind that is an 82-game season. When you look at the Clippers roster, the one position that stands out for not being as deep is the center position.
The Clippers re-signed restricted free agent Ivica Zubac to a four-year, $28 million deal. As it currently stands, the Clippers’ options at center include Zubac, Montrezl Harrell and Angel Delgado.
However, that would be if the Clippers ran Kawhi Leonard as the power forward, Paul George as the small forward and Landry Shamet as the shooting guard, giving the team no backup point guard.
A better rotation would have George at the two, Leonard at the three and Harrell at the four. Shamet can then serve as the backup point guard with George shifting to the three and Leonard to the four when Lou Williams is on the floor.
Either way, Harrell might find himself splitting time between power forward and center and with Angel Delgado being unproven, the Clippers need to look to add depth options.
It does not need to be an elite option either, just someone who can eat minutes in the regular season. It has to be a cheap option as well, as the Clippers no longer have salary-cap space.
Enter Tyson Chandler, who would be the perfect veteran minimum option for the Clippers to pursue to come off the bench.
Chandler was bought out by the Phoenix Suns last year and played with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he served the exact same role. Chandler’s numbers are far from eye-popping but he was effective in his role with the Lakers.
Chandler averaged 3.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game with the Lakers, which is not all that bad considering he only averaged 16.4 minutes per game.
That is exactly what the Los Angeles Clippers need; someone who is okay with playing 10-15 minutes per game, can get a bucket or two and can provide rebounding and rim protection.
The Los Angeles Clippers should undoubtedly be interested in Tyson Chandler. Considering what the team has to spend and what is still available, Chandler would be a great pickup.
