Los Angeles Lakers: Anthony Davis definitely can win MVP in LA
By Jason Reed
LeBron James might be the favorite on win MVP on the Los Angeles Lakers in some people’s eyes but Anthony Davis has as good, if not better, of a shot.
The Los Angeles Lakers have two of the six-seven best players in the league in LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Some may even consider James as the best player in the league because of his numbers, although his age has notched him down a tad.
Regardless, James is one of the league’s very best and so is Anthony Davis, who feels to be slightly underrated at this current point of his career. Likely because he did not play much of last season, Davis has been forgotten as one of the league’s future stars.
For a while, he was viewed as the future face of the NBA. Now, that honor goes to Giannis Antentokounmpo and Davis has really taken a step back in the NBA hierarchy with James Harden, Kevin Durant and Kawhi Leonard‘s current status as well as the emergence of Nikola Jokic as one of the league’s best.

This puts Davis on the outside looking in when it comes to the public’s consensus of who will win the NBA MVP award. Heck, he probably is not even the most likely to win the award on his team as that may go to LeBron James in many people’s eyes.
As of right now, LeBron and Davis have the same odds (7/1) to win the MVP award next season (h/t Bleacher Report).
The two really should not even have the same odds, though, as the more likely of the two to win the award is Anthony Davis. Not only is Davis more likely to win the award but betting on him could be an extremely smart bet.
First and foremost, LeBron is almost certainly going to defer the basketball to Anthony Davis. James is at the point of his career with the mileage on his legs that he cannot afford to put the entire team on his back. Now he has the luxury of not needing to do that with Davis on board.
LeBron is still going to be ball-dominant, which is fine, as Davis can be quite the off-ball scorer both by stretching the floor as well as working in the post. The pick and rolls with LeBron and AD are also going to be dangerous and extremely fun to watch.
Davis averaged 28.1 points per game in his best scoring season two years ago and as he enters his prime there is no reason to believe that he won’t flirt with that 30 per-game mark, even with LeBron on his team.
Plus, he is going to fill the stat sheets with boards as he is going to be the team’s number one rebounder and could average up to a dozen per game. Throw in his defense and the potential to be an All-Defensive player and Davis has a pretty good case to make for winning the award.
If the Los Angeles Lakers end up being one of the four best teams in the league and Davis averages 29 and 12 with 2.8 blocks per game (which he has done before) then it is going to be hard to argue against him.
LeBron James is going to put together his typical box-stuffing numbers but because of his impact on the Los Angeles Lakers both offensively and defensively, Anthony Davis is more likely to win the award.
