Todd Gurley is arguably the best running back in the NFL but that does not mean the Los Angeles Rams back should be on your fantasy team in 2019.

The Los Angeles Rams have arguably the best running back in the league in Todd Gurley and that is why the team, in particular, the offense, has been so successful the last two years.

While quarterback Jared Goff has stepped up and gotten rid of the bust conversations, it is Gurley that helps open up the field and the rest of the playbook for the Rams. That is why the team is so great with play actions and why the offense struggled in the Super Bowl, where Gurley saw very limited time with a banged-up knee.

That banged-up knee is still a storyline in August as we get ready for the NFL preseason. Gurley probably won’t see a single snap in the preseason and it is worrisome being a fan as you really do not know what to expect out of Gurley.

The one thing we can expect is that Gurley is not going to have a great fantasy football season. So unless you are able to snag him in the third or fourth round, which is practically impossible, I would stay away from Gurley altogether this season.

This might seem like common sense but Gurley is still ranked sixth in ESPN’s top fantasy running backs list. Based on how the drafts usually go, the top six to eight backs will be taken in the first two rounds.

The reason he is lower than the one spot and the reason to be wary is that even if his knee is completely healthy, the Rams are not going to rely on him as heavily. There is a reason why they drafted Darrell Henderson as Gurley is only going to get a portion of the workload, not the bulk.

He will still have some good games here and there as he is Todd Gurley but it will not be as consistent of a presence as it has been in the past. All of these is to lead up to the playoffs, where the Rams can hopefully actually use Gurley instead of having to go to an emergency option, such as C.J. Anderson.

In the right circumstance, Gurley is a good pick for daily fantasy, especially if his price is low. However, committing to him for the entire season is an unwise move and won’t win you many games.

Because at the end of the day, the most important thing is that the Los Angeles Rams win, not your fantasy team.

Gurley paid the price of a heavy workload to begin the year last year. This year, he is going to start slow and gradually work his way up to the playoffs, where the reigns will be fully released.
