Los Angeles Chargers: DO NOT trade Melvin Gordon to Houston
By Jason Reed
It may not be long before the Los Angeles Chargers trade Melvin Gordon but it should absolutely not be to the Houston Texans.
It is still unclear what the future holds for Melvin Gordon. Will he be able to work it out with the Los Angeles Chargers? Will his trade demands be met? Or will the Chargers simply hold on to Gordon, him not play and end up being another Le’Veon Bell situation?
All we know right now is that Gordon’s agent has requested a trade from the Chargers as the two sides have not come to an agreement on a new contract. However, the Chargers were willing to offer Gordon a new contract in the ballpark of $10 million per year, although the length is unknown.
We have already discussed how we feel about the offer and Gordon’s response to it (spoiler alert: we don’t think Gordon is thinking about this rationally).

A new potential trade partner has emerged for Melvin Gordon that checks all of the boxes that Gordon should be interested in. They need a running back, check, they have the cap space to give him the money he wants, check, and they are a contending team that gives Gordon a chance to succeed, triple check.
The only problem for Gordon is that all of these checks are the exact reason why the Los Angeles Chargers should not do business with this team. The team, of course, being the Houston Texans.
The Texans recently released D’Onta Foreman and boasts a running back group that is not giving Deshaun Watson that much help. If the team adds an elite running back alongside the already exciting Watson, the Texans are suddenly going to have one of the best offenses in the NFL.
That is great and all and that promise may lead the team to give the Chargers a decent return but it should not matter. The Chargers should not do business with the Texans.
The Texans are an AFC Playoff contender and a possible foe that the Chargers would have to overcome in the postseason in order to get to the Super Bowl. Helping out one of the potential roadblocks when the Chargers rarely have this good of a roster would be baffling.
Granted, Gordon could just sign with Houston after this year and end up there anyway, so you could make the case for the Chargers just biting the bullet and trading Gordon to get something out of him.
However, we don’t even know what next year holds for the Chargers. Philip Rivers is no longer under contract and he could retire, sign with another team or the Chargers could simply move on. The future is not guaranteed, with the one thing we know being that the Chargers are good enough to win a Super Bowl this year.
Yes, it is smart to play the long-term game as well. However, this is the best team that the franchise has fielded since the 14-2 2006 team. The last thing the front office should do is make it harder on themselves when this could be the year.
So if you are a Texans fan reading this article, I would not expect Gordon to be in Houston this year. And if he is, it will be a massive mistake by the Los Angeles Chargers.
