Los Angeles Clippers: Examining a possible trade for Andre Iguodala
By Jason Reed
Chances are that Andre Iguodala will be moved before the start of the NBA season and the Los Angeles Clippers can afford to pull off a trade.
The Golden State Warriors decided to move on from Andre Iguodala this summer to open up cap space in order to bring in D’Angelo Russell. However, chances are that Iguodala will still play for a contender and that contender could be the Los Angeles Clippers.
Golden State practically paid the Memphis Grizzlies to take on Iguodala and the one-year, $15 million remaining on his contract. Alongside the three-time NBA Champion, the Grizzlies also received a protected first-round pick.
The Grizzlies are in no place to contend and are going to focus on giving minutes to the younger players, so Iguodala is certainly going to be moved. Teams without the cap situation to acquire Iguodala are hoping that the veteran is bought out, although that might not ever happen.

Even if the Grizzlies cannot find a trade partner now, the team will eventually be able to find a deal for him before the trade deadline. Instead of paying him $15 million to play elsewhere, the team might as well hold on to him to teach these younger guys and eventually get something out of him.
That is assuming that the Grizzlies find no trade partners. That might not be the case as the Los Angeles Clippers can afford to take on Iguodala.
When examining the situation on ESPN’s Trade Machine, we put together the one trade that we think makes sense for Iguoadala’s services in 2019.
The instant reaction to any trade idea that includes a young player, for any fan of any team in any sport, usually is instant rejection. Hear me out on why this trade makes sense for both sides.
For the Los Angeles Clippers, having a veteran player like Iguodala will be huge come playoff time. Iguodala does not need to take on a massive number of regular-season minutes to be useful but his role in the playoffs is unmatched.
Just look at the impact he had for the Golden State Warriors, who were stacked with stars. The Warriors didn’t even look the same without Iguodala, showing how important he was to the team.
So why give up Jerome Robinson, a lottery pick from 2018? Well, Robinson did not have much of a role on last year’s team and he does not look primed to have much of a role on this year’s team.
With the addition of Paul George, Robinson is going to be vying for minutes at the two-guard behind both George and sixth-man Lou Williams, who both are going to get a surplus of minutes.
I know it is hard trading a young player but he the team is ready to contend for at least the two years. By the time a door might open for him to get significant minutes, he might only have one year left on his deal.
And by that time, because he didn’t get big minutes beforehand, he might not even progress into the kind of player he can become.
For the Grizzlies, this is a huge win. They flip one year of Iguodala for a young player that they could actually give a chance to play. Imagine a Ja Morant-Robinson backcourt where Robinson can be the lethal three-point shooter.
Maurice Harkless was just acquired via trade and won’t have as big of an impact as Iguodala, so it is worth flipping that for something more impactful.
