The Battle for Football Supremacy in LA: The Rams and Chargers
By Redan Lopez
Redan’s Take: Rams over Chargers
The Rams are the better overall team. When I think of the Rams, I look at how coach Sean McVay has installed such a system of consistency and creativity that inspires the players. Not to discredit Chargers’ head coach Anthony Lynn and the excellent work he has done with the Chargers, but I just feel more confident in the Rams and their ability to pull out big games.

Sure, the fragility and concern of Todd Gurley’s knees worry me significantly because he is critical to what the Rams do offensively. But they also have rookie Darrell Henderson to help fill back Gurley up and provide a change of pace along with Malcolm Brown. It could mean that Gurley is fresher when he plays, which would not be a bad thing.
At the same time, Melvin Gordon seems to be a lost cause as he is seeking a trade out of Los Angeles. This would leave backups Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson as the two primary backs, who would more likely than not split the load. I am not worried about them because they both showed their value last year when they took over while Gordon was out for four games.
Playing in the NFC West helps the Rams as their biggest competition at this point is Seattle, a run-heavy team that likes to control the clock. While the Chargers have to face the high powered Kansas City Chiefs and defensive threat Denver Broncos, both of whom are nothing to sneeze at.
However, the key element that makes me more confident about the Rams than the Chargers is the play at quarterback. The quarterback is the backbone of the team and can make or break its success, for better or for worse.
Goff’s growth, especially this past year has been amazing. He is quickly rising the ranks to be one of the elite quarterbacks and is only going to get better. I just feel that he has so much more to give and has the perfect supporting cast to get the Rams to take that next step. While he did have a little hiccup after the bye week last season, he rebounded.
Rivers should not be disrespected though as he has been so good for so long. His turnovers in games have just come at the most inopportune times. As a fan, I’m worried about him in those big moments. Its that lack of confidence that makes doubt that he can get the Chargers all the way to the end.
My confidence in Goff’s play and execution as well as in McVay’s cerebral creativity and strategy (notwithstanding that Super Bowl performance last season) have me giving the edge to the Rams.
