Los Angeles Chargers: Things that must happen to win Super Bowl LIV
By Jason Reed
1. Philip Rivers has to be as good as he was last season
Philip Rivers will go down as one of the most underrated quarterbacks of all-time if he does not win a Super Bowl. Just in terms of sheer numbers, Rivers has the chance to even be better than Dan Marino, who suffers the same fate but is still widely known as one of the best quarterbacks of all-time.
Part of the reason is the lack of Super Bowl success, another part is that he is playing in the era of the quarterback. Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and Brett Favre have all been in the league at the same time as Rivers, making him fly under the radar.
That is why the narrative of him trekking towards his first ring is such a good one for any football fan to get behind this season. If he is going to complete that trek, though, he is going to at least be as good as he was last season, which as one of the best of his career.
Rivers finished the season with 4,308 passing yards, a 68.3 completion percentage (second-best of his career), 32 passing touchdowns (third-best) and a 71.2 quarterback rating (third-best).
Rivers does not have to have some Patrick Mahomes-level season, but he does need to repeat last year’s efforts of being reliable and consistent all year long. It doesn’t even have to be flashy, it just has to be consistent.
