Los Angeles Chargers: Things that must happen to win Super Bowl LIV
By Jason Reed
3. The defense just has to be healthy heading into the playoffs
There are no tricks here. The Los Angeles Chargers do not need a certain area of the defense to step up or anything of that nature. All the Chargers need to be successful in the playoffs and be good defensively is to be healthy, which can be a lot to ask.

The team obviously does not have to be completely healthy, as that is near-impossible in football. However, if the impact players are on the field, then the Chargers are going to be a much better team in the playoffs.
Just look at the group of guys the Chargers have. They have arguably the best edge rush duo in Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram, two Pro Bowl players that are even All-Pro-caliber. Of course, Bosa has his history with injuries.
In the secondary, the team has an All-Pro in Desmond King and no slouch in Casey Hayward alongside solid players in Michael Davis and Trevor Williams. A healthy Derwin James makes the secondary one of the best in the league and he is set to return (hopefully) by late November.
The linebacker unit, which was once a sore spot, is now much better. Denzel Perryman is back, the team brought in Thomas Davis and Uchenna Nwosu was great at moments last year.
The interior defensive line was a surprise last year and is primed to be great yet again. Brandon Mebane, Justin Jones and Damion Square are all great and 2019 first-round pick Jerry Tillery has a ton of potential, especially alongside Bosa and Ingram.
All-Pro special teams player Adrian Phillips is a Swiss Army Knife on the defense, Rayshawn Jenkins is better than Jahleel Addae and second-round pick Nasir Adderley fits the culture of having lethal ballhawks on the defense.
This is a deep defense that can pressure the quarterback and pick off his passes like vultures. They also can stop the run, allowing the tenth-fewest rushing yards per game last season.
Just be healthy, that is all the Los Angeles Chargers need from their defense in January. No bells, no whistles.
