The USC Football Trojans began their 2019 season in the win column. Unfortunately, the win did come with a loss: the starting quarterback. The Trojans’ hope is not all lost though, from the first game there were bright spots.

The start to the 2019 season for the USC Football team is exactly what any football team wants: a win; except that they are down their starting quarterback, JT Daniels, who suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in the opening game against Fresno State.

A shame indeed for this team, as JT played very well, throwing for 215 yards and a touchdown.

Yet the quarterbacks were not who really shined in the opening game. Instead, it was the starting running back, Vavae Malepeai, who ran for 134 yards with a touchdown in the win against Fresno State.

Not to mention that the second running back, Stephen Carr, wasn’t too shabby either. Carr ra the ball just six times for 56 yards and a touchdown.

It seems that the Trojans have playmakers on defense as well with Isaiah Pola-Mao having himself a game with a sack and an interception on the night. Christian Rector also managed to grab himself a sack along with Drake Jackson and Brandon Pili combing for half a sack each.

Although the defense didn’t shine enough. The Trojans still allowed 23 points to the Bulldogs. Their quarterback Jorge Reyna torched the defense, throwing for 256 yards with two touchdowns. Reyna also managed to lead the Bulldogs in rushing.

If anything this proved that the Trojans can hold down the run.  The Trokans only gave up 53 yards to the running back. Work still needs to be done to improve as a team, though, and a blow to their offensive leader might stunt that team growth.

Kedon Slovis needs to prove himself worthy of being the team’s starting quarterback and rally the team back on the track to success. While a win on night one is great the worry now is if they can win more with a backup quarterback.

Overall, the USC Football Trojans proved themselves in the first game of the season. But can they do that for the next 11 games? Every great team has had to overcome struggle. Now the Trojans have to prove that they can not only rally for the fans but rally for JT Daniels as well.
