Los Angeles Dodgers: Three players who are stuck in between this winter
By Jason Reed
1. Tony Gonsolin
Tony Gonsolin really impressed in the short amount of time that he was with the big-league club this season. After being in High-A for most of the season in 2018, Gonsolin really shot up the prospect ranks with a strong year and became a household name for Dodger fans in Spring Training.
Gonsolin finally got his chance late in the season and was used in different ways, whether it was as a reliever or as a starter. He was roughed up in his first outing with an unlucky first inning but he still finished with a 2.93 ERA in 40 innings pitched for the Dodgers.
However, he was not included in the postseason roster and the roster spot instead went to Dustin May, who finished out the year strong and has better stuff than Gonsolin when he is on.
Gonsolin not making the postseason roster is an indication that he is stuck in-between. He is talented enough to be a starting pitcher, but with a rotation that is already deep that might also include May and Julio Urias next season, he likely won’t be included in the rotation.
He could be the long-relief guy out of the bullpen and there is nothing wrong with that, but he does feel almost too good to be slotted in that role.
Realistically, that is probably what the Dodgers are going to do, but it is only a result of being stuck in between and simply being the odd man out in the rotation picture.
