Los Angeles Dodgers: It’s going to be Gerrit Cole or nothing this winter

3. There is no other real need on the team
There have been some “dream scenarios” that have been floating around the Los Angeles Dodgers community this offseason, both of which deals with infielders. The first is the team signing Anthony Rendon, who just finished one of the best Octobers in recent memory.

This would include Justin Turner switching positions, likely to first base, to accommodate Rendon at third base. This seems perfect on paper as Turner has been getting progressively worse at third base and first base is far less challenging.
The other dream scenario is the team including Corey Seager in a trade for Francisco Lindor, the switch-hitting all-star shortstop on the Cleveland Indians. We have detailed already why that trade would not be worth it for the Dodgers, as Lindor is not big enough of an upgrade over Seager to warrant sending Seager and prospects.
The problem with both of these is that the infield is already full and is what it is. The quartet of Turner, Seager, Gavin Lux and Max Muncy make up the infield and should continue to make up the infield for the years to come.
Who is going to get kicked out if Rendon is signed? You can’t move Turner to first unless you play on playing Muncy at second, but then what happens to Lux? Are they going to waste Minor League Baseball’s best player in 2018 on the bench?
It just does not work out. The only way in which this is feasible, again, includes someone such as deGrom requesting a trade, the Dodgers including Gavin Lux among others in that trade and then signing Anthony Rendon.
That is a stretch as it is a lot that has to happen that probably won’t happen. For that reason, in terms of big-name acquisitions, it is going to be Gerrit Cole or nothing this winter.
