Los Angeles Clippers: Why the Clippers shouldn’t make a trade this season
By Jason Reed
Every contending NBA team should be looking to improve at the trade deadline, however, for the Los Angeles Clippers, that shouldn’t come via trade.
The Los Angeles Clippers are one of the elite teams in the NBA that have a legitimate shot of winning the NBA Championship. While in theory any team that makes the playoffs can win the title, there really are only a handful of teams that can realistically win it all this season.
The Clippers are one of those teams and typically those teams are looking to make improvements during the quest to the NBA Finals. More often than not, these improvements come via the NBA Trade Deadline, where a team can acquire previously unavailable assets.
There is no better example than this than every single LeBron James-led team of the last 10 years.

The Los Angeles Clippers are undoubtedly in that boat. While the team is doing great to start the season, it would be foolish to say that the team is perfect. Can this team win the NBA Championship as it is right now? Absolutely. But that does not mean that the front office should simply ignore any possible improvements.
The one thing about the Clippers, however, is that they should not look to upgrade via the trade deadline. I would not expect the team to be active at all at the deadline and unless a great trade falls in the team’s lap, as the Ivica Zubac trade did last season.
There are two primary reasons why the Clippers should not look to add via the trade deadline. The first has to do with something that sometimes gets overblown in sports but absolutely applies to the Clippers — chemistry.
The Clippers have built a culture from the top to the bottom of the organization that complements each other, gives the team a sense of identity and brings the players together. There is a reason that the Clippers team without any stars last season was able to surprise the world and make the playoffs.
While there are players that could be traded, the front office would be toeing a fine line of disrupting the chemistry and identity that the team has, all depending on who they trade away. It is not the sole reason to shy away from a trade, but it absolutely is something that is relevant to the Clippers.
Second of all, the Clippers do not need to use the trade deadline to make their improvements and instead are going to have the luxury of adding help in other ways. The buyout market is going to become a rich one down the stretch of the season and the Clippers are going to be the first team on many player’s list.
Heck, it would not be all that surprising to see the Memphis Grizzlies end up buying out Andre Iguodala with no team willing to make a trade for the veteran forward. If that happens, you know the Clippers are going to make a run at Iguodala.
Heck, it was recently reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that Darren Collision is eyeing an NBA return in February after surprisingly retiring after the 2019 season. The Clippers and Lakers are his preferred destination and that would be a huge boost to the rotation.
The Los Angeles Clippers have several avenues that the front office can take to improve the team that has nothing to do with making a trade. For a team that already has a lot of things going right, that makes a trade unnecessary.
