Los Angeles Chargers: Tom Brady to LA makes sense and I hate it

We do not know who the Los Angeles Chargers quarterback will be next season and unfortunately, the case for Tom Brady makes too much sense.

The Los Angeles Chargers are at a crossroads. After 14 seasons of Hall of Fame-level play out of Philip Rivers, it feels like it is time to move on. While Rivers seems like he likely will play in 2020, there is a chance that it is not with the Chargers.

Rivers potentially leaving opens the door for the quarterback discussion. There is an opportunity to try and bring someone in for one year, maybe someone such as Cam Newton, to serve as a bridge quarterback.

Tyrod Taylor could even serve as the bridge quarterback to the new franchise quarterback, giving the Chargers a year to mentor whoever they take in the NFL Draft.

Or the team could throw the rookie out to the wolves in year one and see what happens. That is not a failed method, but quarterbacks in the past have benefitted from sitting and learning for a year.

The only problem is that the Chargers have a talented-enough core to make the playoffs and simply cannot afford to throw years away with a mediocre bridge quarterback or a rookie that is not ready.

That is what makes one situation seem so perfect and it is something that we have already heard rumblings of — Tom Brady coming to Los Angeles and joining the Chargers. As a Charger fan, I hate everything about it, but I recognize how much sense it makes.

For Brady, this an avenue to get out of New England, who did not surround him with much talent last season. We saw it with LeBron James, sometimes the lifestyle (and weather) of Los Angeles is just too hard to say no to.

This gives him a place to finish his career for a season or two and he would have a receiving corps that is much better than his current corps with Keenan Allen and Mike Willaims leading the way. And just imagine Austin Ekeler alongside Brady. Ekeler is literally the perfect running back to play alongside Brady.

It makes even more sense for the Chargers. First of all, this is the first season of the team in Sofi Stadium and there are already concerns around ticket sales. What is a quick way to instantly boost ticket sales? Sign Tom Brady, the greatest quarterback of all-time.

Brady would give the team something to market heading into the new season and in the eyes of the team, might be the only way to help this issue. Heck, I would not even be surprised if the Chargers offered Brady part ownership in some way shape or form.

Second of all, there is no better mentor to have than Brady, who hopefully would take up a mentor role and not be worried about the guy taking his job, similar to the Jimmy Garoppolo situation. Brady has seen anything a quarterback can see and if he is accepting of that role then he would make a massive difference.

Why do I hate this, then? It is not because of any resentment towards Brady, which most football fans seem to have. I simply just don’t think he is a great quarterback anymore. The Chargers would be going from one aging quarterback to an aging quarterback that is even older who looked awful down the stretch.

Granted, he did not have much around him, but Brady did nothing to help his case. Father time is catching up and I genuinely don’t think signing Brady would bring the Los Angeles Chargers any closer to winning a Super Bowl.

However, the Los Angeles Chargers need to save face and sell some tickets to at least somewhat justify the highly-criticized move to Los Angeles. Brady helps that problem.
